Happy New Year's from JASW
On behalf of the Nichibei Kyokai of Washington DC (JASW) and
its Board of Trustees, I would like to thank you for your generous support this
past year and offer a heartfelt New Year’s greetings to the readers of the
Sakura Shimbun.
In 2014, we offered over 80 cultural, educational and
business related programs to the Greater Washington DC area. These programs were not possible without our
dedicated volunteers, both Japanese and American. Therefore, I would like to thank those
volunteers who help us organize all our programs. Our
largest outreach program, Sakura Matsuri
– Japanese Street Festival had over 40,000 attendees; however, even more
amazing was that 600 volunteers, who helped create the largest one-day Japanese
street festival in America. These
volunteers range from the Sakura Matsuri Committee members who plan from the
early phases, to the day-of volunteers who make sure the festival runs smoothly. Most significantly, many volunteers have come
back to help us year after year.
This serves our goal, which is to support and cultivate
close relationship between Japan and the United States. We believe that this starts from a
person-to-person level by having good understanding and personal connection
between Japanese and Americans. We would
like to nurture those opportunities for both Japanese and American people here
in Washington, DC.
Furthermore, we understand the importance of our educational
programs for young children whom we consider the next generation of US-Japan
relations. Let me introduce several more important programs,
which are also supported and organized by a significant number of our
volunteers as mentioned below.
Japan-in-a-Suitcase
(JiS) is a free program in which we pack a bit of Japan in a
suitcase, and bring it to area children at schools, libraries and festivals. Over 50 volunteers help us promote a better understanding
of Japan and Japanese culture to elementary school children through hands-on
activities, games and demonstrations. We
reached out to more than 1300 elementary school students in 2014 through this
program.
Japan
Bowl® is an academic competition that tests the achievements of
high school students throughout the US, who are studying the Japanese language. Japan Bowl motivates not only the 230
students participating, but the thousands of students involved with the
competition process around the country.
I would like to thank the more than100 volunteers that help make Japan
Bowl the premier competition for students who are learning Japanese language
and culture.
Lastly, for the past five years we have been
offering Ohanashikai (Japanese Story
Time) every Wednesday morning to our members with toddlers. We could not do this fun and educational
program without the volunteers that take time to create and develop great
activities for the children.
ワシントンＤＣ日米協会そして理事会を代表致しまして、昨年中、皆様からいただきました寛大なご支援に感謝いたしますと共に、さくら新聞の読者の皆様に心より新年のご挨拶を申し上げます。
2014年は、80以上に及ぶ文化的、教育的、そしてビジネスに関連したプログラムをワシントンＤＣエリアの皆様に提供させて頂きました。これらのプログラムは、日本とアメリカ両国の献身的なボランティアの皆様のお力無しには成功させることは出来ませんでした。当協会のプログラムを支えて下さったボランティアの皆様へ心より感謝を申し上げたいと思います。
特に、当協会最大の日本文化普及プログラムであるSakura Matsuri – Japanese Street
Festival 2014には、40万人以上の来訪者があり、さらに素晴らしいことに、600人ものボランティアの方々が全米で最大規模のジャパニーズストリートフェスティバルを私たちと共に創り上げて下さいました。これらのボランティアの中には、さくらまつり委員会のメンバーとして、祭りの初期段階から計画に加わって下さる方々や、当日スムーズに祭りが運営できるようお手伝いして下さる方々までいらっしゃいます。また、大変ありがたいことに、多くのボランティアの方々がさくらまつりを支援するために、毎年ボランティアとして戻ってきてくださいます。
当協会の目標は、日米が緊密な関係を育くむことを支援することです。私たちは日米間の良好な関係は、個人レベルでの相互理解に基づくと信じております。私たちは、ここワシントンＤＣで、日本人とアメリカ人の皆様にこういった機会を提供していきたいと考えております。
さらに、私たちは次世代の日米関係を担う若者への教育的プログラムの重要性を認識しており、以下のような教育プログラムを実施しております。
ジャパン・イン・ア・スーツケース（通称：JIS）は、スーツケースに日本の子供たちが使うランドセルや教科書などを詰め込み、学校、図書館、お祭り等で、地域の子どもたちに日本の文化を紹介する無料のプログラムです。50人以上のボランティアの手助けにより、ゲームやデモンストレーション等の体験活動を通して、アメリカの小学生が日本と日本文化をよりよく理解できる機会を提供しています。
ジャパンボール®は、全米で日本語を勉強する高校生を対象にトーナメント形式で、日本語能力のみならず、日本の文化・習慣・歴史・地理・時事・日米関係など、日本に関する幅広い分野の知識について競い合う全米大会です。ジャパンボールは競技に参加する230名の生徒だけではなく、全米各地で開催される予選に参加した何千人もの生徒のやる気を促進しています。
最後に、過去6年間、毎週水曜日午前中に当協会会員メンバーのお子様を対象にしたお話会（ジャパニーズ・ストーリー・タイム：日本の絵本の読み聞かせ）を提供して参りました。お話会のボランティアの方々は、子ども達のため素晴らしい活動を創り発展させてこられました。
当協会のボランティアの方々は、日本や日米関係に対する特別な絆を感じておられます。この絆は両国の関係を常に緊密に保つ絆です。ワシントンＤＣ日米協会はこれらの主要なプログラムを通して、日本と米国の絆を強化するために今後も取り組んで参ります。
