Word of the Month - July 2015
July: 風鈴 (Fuu-rin)
This month's word is Fuu-rin.
Fuu-rin are
wind-chimes that are hung outdoors and are traditionally hung during the
summer. Although originally crafted from bronze, they have come to most
commonly be made out of glass. They are usually small glass bells with a paper,
called a tanzaku, hanging off its
clapper. When the wind blows, the paper moves the paper into the sides of the
bell, making a チリ〜ン、チリ〜ン (chirin chirin/ring ring) sound. These dainty wind chimes are often
associated with the sounds of summer.
