Word of the Month: March

March: タコライス (Taco-Rice)

The chef from Parlor Senri, a restaurant in Okinawa, took the idea of tacos, which are so popular among the American military, and created a nationwide popular dish called Taco Rice. This Mex-Oki delicacy owes its very existence to the presence of the American military in Okinawa. Regular tacos did not provide enough sustenance as a meal for the soldiers, so the chef came up with the idea of putting taco ingredients on rice to increase their volume and nutrition. Taco Rice consists of taco-flavored ground beef on a bed of rice, and often served with Mexican cheese, lettuce, tomato, and salsa.
