Word of the Month: April
April: チキン南蛮 (Chicken Nanban)
This month's word is Chicken Nanban. Chicken Nanban is a
Japanese-style Western food made out of seasoned fried chicken covered in a
sweet, sour, and spicy sauce. It is often served with tartar sauce made out of
mayonnaise, eggs, and onion. Originally, chicken breast was commonly used but
these days a lot of restaurants use chicken thighs. It is said that the dish
originated from a restaurant called "London" or a restaurant called
"Ogura". Both of them are located in Miyazaki. The word Nanban uses
the kanji characters for "South" and "Barbarians". The
meaning of "Nanban" changes in different situations, for example when
normally combined it means "Southern Barbarians" but when related to
food it means "Western Dish in a Japanese Style."
