Word of the Month - October 2015

October: Sanma (秋刀魚)

This month's word is Sanma.

Sanma is the pacific saury (Colabis saira), or more simply mackerel pike. The kanji is made up of autumn (秋), knife (刀), and fish (魚).  You could say that sanma is literally the autumn knife fish in reference to its body shape. It somewhat resembles a knife, and its peak season is autumn. The term saira in its scientific name is the fish's local name in the Kii Peninsula in Japan. The sanma is one of the most prominent seasonal foods in Japan representing autumn. It is commonly served salted and grilled whole with daikon oroshi alongside a bowl of rice and miso soup.
