February: B級グルメ
(B-Kyuu Gurume)
This month's word is B-Kyuu Gurume.
Unlike the "A-list" gourmet foods with first-class ingredients and services, B-kyuu gurume ("B-list" gourmet), are delicious dishes with reasonable prices that are eaten regularly. Typical examples of B-kyuu gurume are Takoyaki (Octopus Puffs), Udon, Yakisoba, and so on. Around 2006, regional areas of Japan started making unique dishes by creating stories, or a histories based on local special ingredients, and this became a great way to promote the region or town. There is a contest call B-1 Guranpuri or "B-list Local Gourmet Grand Prix" in Japan, where each prefecture competes with their #1 B-kyuu gurume dish to see which is Japan's #1 B-kyuu gurume.
JASW will introduce a different B-kyuu gurume each month this year!
