Word of the Month: June

June: ひるぜん焼きそば
(Hiruzen Yakisoba)

This month's word is Hiruzen Yakisoba.  Hiruzen Yakisoba might be one of the most well-known B-kyuu gourmet. This dish won the first prize in the B-1 contest in 2011. What makes this dish stand out from all the other kinds of yakisoba (Japanese stir-fried noodle) is that chicken breast and locally grown cabbage are used instead of the usual thin sliced pork. It is seasoned with Mongolian BBQ sauce or miso-based sweat and salty sauce. In Hiruzen area in the 1950's, it was very popular to eat Mongolian BBQ or yakisoba with homemade original sauces. The restaurant called "Masuya Shokudo" took this idea and made the first Hiruzen Yakisoba. Since then, the dish has been one of the most popular dish in the Hiruzen Area located on the border of Okayama and Tottori prefectures.
