December 2015
年越蕎麦
(Toshikoshi Soba)

December's word is Toshikoshi Soba.

Toshikoshi Soba literally means year-end or year-splitsoba. It's a traditional Japanese noodle dish eaten on New Year's Eve. The idea of the custom is that by eating thesoba, which is a noddle that is easy to cut while eating, one lets go of all the hardships they had for the old year, and welcome new experiences for the new year. The buckwheat plant, which soba is made from, can survive severe weather during its growing period. This is why sobarepresents strength and resiliency.

Also, goldsmiths used to gather gold dust by using sobaflowers. Hence, soba is believed to bring good fortune, and the long soba noodles represent a long life as well.
